This ended up being a very exciting softball tournament for us tonight. We would need victories in back-to-back games to win the Lower Division Softball Tournament. With our highest team ranking of all the teams in the play-offs, we earned the first round quarter-final bye last week and “home” team throughout the play-offs. This would prove to be very important in our first game against Time Warner.
Time Warner quickly took advantage of us in the top of the first inning and scored 5 runs. Scott’s over-the-fence home run brought us within 2 runs of Time Warner, but despite our efforts we trailed that team throughout the rest of the game. Going into the bottom of the 9th inning, we were behind, 10-7. With our last at-bats in the game, we needed a big rally and at least half our prayers were answered since we had both the top of the batting line-up for our men and women coming up. This was our final chance. Consecutive hits allowed us to quickly score 3 runs to “tie” the game, and we then had our “winning” run at third with one out. A line drive to left field scored Scott and the winning run! Our 4 run 9th inning rally secured the victory and earned us a berth in the Championship Game!
Final Score (Semi-Final Game): 11-10.
We carried the emotion and “Mo” from the victory into the Championship Game against Team Gupta. Earlier in the season, we split the series against Team Gupta with both teams scoring ALOT of runs. This would prove to be the case again for the finale. Mark lead-off the game with an over-the-fence home run, and we were quickly ahead 7-2 by the end of the second inning. Later in the game, a home run by Lou and Chris further increased our lead. With our tightening defense controlling the game, the score was 16-10 going in the bottom of the 8th inning. We needed another late inning rally to put the game out of reach for our opponents. Our 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th put us way ahead 22-10 (22 runs is our season scoring high!). Team Gupta’s last gasp scored 5 runs in the ninth but that was not enough for them.
Final Score (Championship Game): 22-15!
